Hydrocephaly

It’s Friday and only the weekend left here in Lamap, before I fly to Port Vila on Monday and then on to Papua New Guinea on Wednesday.

Last night I had a 28yr old woman present at the clinic with Rt sided chest pain - should settle with antibiotics and analgesia.

I have found a 3mth old baby girl in Lamap with Hydrocephalus - this is an abnormal build up of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles of the brain. The fluid is under increased pressure and can compress and damage the brain, while causing, or resulting in the head to expand abnormally. I’m trying to organise to get her and her mother to Port Vila as soon as possible, so a shunt operation can be organised and performed. This may have to be done in Australia or New Zealand.
